Malibu beach

July 20, 2017

Rays of sunshine broke through the curtains, waking me up for a day of fun. I had planned to hop in the car and walk around LA, find the "Bates Motel" and some cool cactus shop I had seen on instagram. Yet, I just was not in the mood. I lie in bed for 3 hours. I went through some note folders in my phone from 2012, where I had listed a bunch of fun stuff to do in LA. Leave it to 18 year old me, to make those things a bunch of dangerous adventures that I didn't really feel like doing on my own.

Honestly, here I was in California, my favorite place and I was feeling discontent. I was feeling blah and lonely. My friend was going to be in a conference all day, so I had no one to motivate me to get up and do something. You'd think being in sunny California with a rental car and bag of oranges would cheer someone up. Really, it's just a matter of the heart. I was far from Jesus and I knew I wasn't putting in the effort I should in our relationship.

"Malibu." Is what the Lord put on heart. What? Why? Because Jesus likes to take us on adventures and spend time with us. Malibu has never been on my radar. In my head, it just didn't seem like a place I would like. Preconcieved notions of this place is all it was. So, I forcefully made myself get up, get dressed, and pack my bag for the day. I started my drive out to Malibu, spending time singing and talking to Jesus; reconnecting.

Driving down the 1 was so fun. Every turn brought something new and beautiful to my attention. Finally, as I reach the top of this one hill, I see the beach spread out as far as the eye can see. I'm brought into a state of awe. How can this beautiful place be so real? As soon as I see beach area and a pull off, I pulled off on the shoulder and the next thing I know, sprinting to the beach across the street. No one but me was on the first beach I stopped at. It wasn't that nice upon arriving, seaweed everywhere with an odd smell, but I was glad to be stretching my legs and soaking in some sun. I stayed a few more minutes and hopped back in the car.

A few more miles up the road, I find another shoulder with a "Public Beach" sign across the way. A couple is getting out of their car right ahead of me, so I ask them if they'd ever been here and if they knew how to get to the beach. This man had the most beautiful Australian accent, he pointed across the street and told me to go through the gate hidden in between these trees. What I love about these California beaches, is the little alley ways you have to walk through just to get to the beach. They all smell like pot too, which makes it even funnier to me. It never fails dude. Cracks me up every time. So anyway, here you see I come out of this secret passageway to a lovely secluded beach.

My spirit of adventure was finally kicking in and I could hardly stay long at this beach. I worked on my tan as long as my patience would allow and I hopped back up and headed to the car. There was one beach I had heard about in Malibu and I was off to find it. I had no idea the name of, so I prayed that Jesus would let me 'stumble' upon it. So I drove. And drove some more. Passing public beach signs, waiting for the right one. Finally, I made it to the top of a hill, a public beach sign to my left. It felt right. I parked the car and walked across the street. Boy, was my mind blown. This place was gorgeous. I walked around taking photos of these yellow flowers for about ten minutes before I looked over the edge and realized just how grand this place was.

As I walked down amongst the giant rocks, I realize that Jesus had led me to the beach that I wanted to find. It was a sweet moment. He knows us and just the small things like this, the creator of the universe brought me to this lovely beach. Me. Just plain ole' me. The creator of the universe is spending time with me and taking me on adventures. It's just crazy to think about ya know.
